Elon Musk says President Trump is willing to shut down the US Agency for International Development for good.
In an X space with former Department of Government Efficiency co-leader Vivek Ramaswamy and Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, Musk said Trump agreed to dissolving the agency after extensive discussions.
Musk said the agency was “incredibly politically partisan.” He added that USAID needs to be shut down because it’s a “bowl of worms” without an apple. It’s “beyond repair.”
President Trump has yet to confirm whether Musk’s statement about his intentions is true, but on Sunday he told reporters USAID was “run by radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out, and then we’ll make a decision” about its future.
President Trump has already ordered a freeze on foreign aid.
Meanwhile, Senate Democrats wrote to Secretary of State Marco Rubio to protest the visit of DOGE representatives to USAID. Two senior USAID officials are reported to have been placed on leave after denying the representatives access to the agency’s internal systems.
The Democrats raised concerns that classified data might be access or placed in jeopardy.
Katie Miller, a member of DOGE’s advisory board, said on X, “No classified material was accessed without proper security clearances” during the visit.
