A clear association exists between levels of glyphosate exposure and diabetes in US adults, according to a new study.

Over 1.8 million tons of glyphosate, the active ingredient in the Roundup herbicide, are used annually in the United States, at a rate of about 0.75 pounds per acre of crops, across 298 million acres of agricultural land. The Midwest, California and Texas together account for 75% of all glyphosate use in the nation.

Studies have suggested that over 80% of Americans over the age of six have detectable levels of glyphosate in their urine. A study of pregnant women from the Midwest showed that 99% of subjects had the chemical in their bodies.

Nearly 40 million people in the US are estimated to have diabetes, or 11.6% of the population.  30 million have been diagnosed with the condition. A further 97.6 million people, or 38% of the population, are estimated to have prediabetes, the early stages of the condition.

For the new study, researchers took urine samples from nearly 3,000 adults and measured them for levels of glyphosate and glycosylated haemoglobin, a key index of diabetes risk. They also used patient information about diabetes diagnoses.

The researchers found a significant positive correlation between levels of urinary glyphosate on the one hand and glycosylated haemoglobin and diabetes diagnoses on the other.

Glyphosate was also recently discovered in the semen of French men at concentrations four times higher than in the blood. Seventy-three of 128 men tested as part of the study had the chemical in their seminal fluid. The highest concentrations, unsurprisingly, were found in the semen of a farmer, who was probably spraying glyphosate over his fields.

It’s also been suggested that glyphosate may be responsible, at least in part, for the stunning rise in autism cases in the US in recent decades.
