The GOP-led Oversight Committee announced Monday it is subpoenaing the Department of Homeland Security for documents concerning Kamala Harris running mate Tim Walz, after a whistleblower alleged troubling links between the Democrat Minnesota governor and the Chinese Communist Party.
“During its briefings with over twenty federal agencies in its investigation, the Committee has learned of the emphasis the CCP has placed on influencing subnational government leaders, including state governors,” reads a letter from Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
“Along those lines, the Committee has recently received whistleblower disclosures informing the Committee of serious concern among Department of Homeland Security (DHS) personnel regarding a longstanding connection between the CCP and Minnesota Governor Timothy James Walz.”

Comer stated the whistleblower uncovered DHS employees’ discussing concerns over Walz’s CCP ties in a Microsoft Teams group chat, which he said was pertinent to the Committee’s investigation.
“The Committee has also learned that further relevant information regarding Governor Walz has been memorialized in both classified and unclassified documents in the control of DHS,” Comer further informed Mayorkas, adding he wanted DHS to produce the documents, in addition to “communications regarding Governor Walz’s connections with the CCP.”
The Oversight Committee chair’s letter goes on to note Walz’s ties to China were under investigation “long before” he was chosen as Harris’ running mate, and that the investigation “seeks to understand the extent of the CCP’s infiltration and influence campaign and to identify legislative reforms to combat CCP political warfare targeting prominent Americans for elite capture.”
“The information required of DHS by the Committee’s subpoena will inform the Committee’s understanding of how successful the CCP has been in waging political warfare in and against the United States, how effectively federal agencies are addressing the communist regime’s campaign, and what reforms are necessary to counter this threat.”
News of the Oversight Committee’s investigation comes on the eve of the first debate between Walz and Republican VP candidate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, set to be hosted by CBS News on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET.
