Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) cheered on the Elon Musk-led DOGE task force eliminating government waste, fraud, and abuse, urging it to go further by exposing the CIA’s “Operation Mockingbird,” where the spy agency covertly propagandized Americans by controlling numerous national media outlets.
“So we know now that USAID was funding so many news outlets to include the BBC,” Rep. Luna stated Thursday, referring to recent revelations the federal agency funneled money to numerous leftist causes and media orgs.
“So I want to remind people: Remember that Project Mockingbird, that was declassified was actually a CIA op during the Cold War to actually use media to influence people to include the American people.”
“So are we surprised that USAID, which is also doing a lot of the dirty work for the intelligence agencies, was caught red-handed funding massive propaganda outlets, not just in the United States but across the world? No, we’re not surprised at all.”
The Florida rep went on to praise the work of the DOGE team, and cautioned Musk he’s putting his life at risk by challenging the Deep State’s money laundering operation.
“Now, I just want to be clear about something. I absolutely think that what Elon specifically is doing is dangerous, probably to his life, because he’s pissing off a lot of people, but he has his security and he has the ability to do it. So continue onward, onward, onward.”
Former Washington Post journalist and Watergate scandal reporter Carl Bernstein explained in an Oct. 1977 Rolling Stone article that some of the Operation Mockingbird journalists working with the CIA “were Pulitzer Prize winners, distinguished reporters who considered themselves ambassadors-without-portfolio for their country.”
“Most were less exalted: foreign correspondents who found that their association with the Agency helped their work; stringers and freelancers who were as interested it the derring-do of the spy business as in filing articles, and, the smallest category, full-time CIA employees masquerading as journalists abroad,” he added.
As the Church Committee hearings in 1975 threatened to expose the CIA’s controversial methods, former CIA directors William Colby and George H.W. Bush “persuaded the committee to restrict its inquiry into the matter and to deliberately misrepresent the actual scope of the activities in its final report,” Bernstein wrote.
If all goes well, the Trump-Musk task force will reveal the full scope of the CIA’s manipulation of the US media and the American people.
