MSNBC anchor Katy Tur had a rare moment of self-reflection over the weekend when she asked if she’s “doing more harm than good” as a reporter while trust in media plummets to an all-time low.
During an interview with The Hill to promote her memoir “Rough Draft,” Tur admitted that she considered quitting the news business because the public “don’t trust” mainstream media sources anymore, and wondered if she contributed to that collapse of trust.
“It’s something that I don’t have a concrete answer to, and that’s not because I don’t love journalism, I do, it’s just convergence of two issues,” Tur told host Niall Stanage.
.@KatyTurNBC: “The trust in media, in newspapers and television, is hitting an all time low. People don’t trust us. They don’t believe us, and it makes me wonder if this job —as I’m currently doing it— is effective, but if it’s doing more harm than good.” https://t.co/eUKLZPCUHm pic.twitter.com/PfjXakQThZ

“One of them being that we cover very dark stuff, in succession, and it seems like its getting darker and darker and it can be hard on your mental health,” Tur said, citing polarized politics, mass shootings and other tragic current events.
“It can be a bit demoralizing, and then on top of that, there was just a Gallup poll out today that shows that the trust in media – newspapers and television – is hitting an all-time low,” she said.
“People don’t trust us, they don’t believe us, and it makes me wonder if this job, as I am currently doing it, is effective, but if it’s doing more harm than good.”
“I don’t have a good answer for that, though, those thoughts linger in the back of my mind,” she continued. “They linger though because I do love it and I think it’s important and I’m hoping to find a way to better communicate with people.”
Much of the reasons people no longer trust institutional media are due to the fact people like Tur herself for years peddled fake news, amplified political talking points, or suppressed real news stories – like that of Hunter Biden’s now-infamous laptop.
Here are some egregious examples from Tur herself over the years:
In April, Tur claimed that there would be “real and devastating consequences” if Twitter allowed former President Trump back onto its platform after banning him permanently in January 2021.
MSNBC’s @KatyTurNBC: “There are real and devastating consequences for using [Twitter] to lie … @elonmusk wants to buy it, but there are — massive, life and globe-altering consequences for just letting people run wild on the thing.” pic.twitter.com/VVjsIvuHsa

Tur peddled fake news in 2020 that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un was “braindead.”

Tur also called people who protested against ineffective forced lockdowns during the beginning of the COVID scare as “just plain dumb.”
In May 2020, during a segment of Tur trying to shame people into wearing masks, a maskless bystander called out MSNBC’s cameraman for also not wearing a mask.
In 2019, Tur claimed that special counsel Robert Mueller had “found quite a bit” of evidence against Trump regarding “Russian collusion.”
After a two-year investigation, Mueller found nothing, and the Russia collusion narrative fell apart.
That same year, Tur called for Trump to be impeached, falsely claiming that he “targets Americans” and “intimidated witnesses.”
In 2018, Tur absurdly claimed Hillary Clinton “had a much deeper relationship with faith” than Trump.
One Twitter user noted examples of MSNBC getting overtly political and refusing to cover newsworthy stories that don’t help Democrats.

This is just Katy Tur and her network.
Here’s MSNBC, CNN, and CBS pundits falsely claiming that Hunter Biden’s laptop was “Russian disinformation.”
If Tur is truly interested in restoring trust in the media, she should resign and allow journalists with integrity to report on current events in good faith, and encourage her colleagues to do the same.
