A majority of Americans, including nearly 60% of Democrats, say that Kamala Harris should not run for president in 2028.
Fifty-seven percent of Democrats polled by Rasmussen Reports say the Democrats need a different candidate in 2028, a view shared by 66% of Republicans, 60% of independent voters and 61% of voters overall.
Voters were also asked why Harris lost the 2024 election. Just under half, 45%, said it was because “the Democratic Party was out of touch with the concerns of most Americans.” Twenty-one percent said she lost because of the Biden administration’s unpopularity, and 18% said Harris was just a “bad candidate.”
In the aftermath of Harris’s devastating loss to Donald Trump, polls have suggested that she is favourite to be the Democrat nominee in 2028.
One poll showed her leading her closest revival, California Governor Gavin Newsom, by 33 points (41% to 8%), followed by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro on 7%, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on 6% and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz on 6% also.
Nearly 60% of respondents still said they would prefer a different candidate.
Harris has also been suggested as the next California governor, because Gavin Newsom can’t run for re-election.
Harris’s defeat has led to anger and serious soul-searching within the Democrat Party and among its supporters.
Senior campaigner James Carville said the campaign, and in particular its enormous spending, had done “unfathomable damage” to the Party.
Carville predicted that future campaigns would have a hard time raising money.
“The resistance is going to have trouble raising money,” Carville said.
“These fundraisers are burnt.”
He went on to say, “The damage that the 2024 campaign has done, the damage this decade has done to the Democratic brand is almost unfathomable.”
Carville then called for a full audit of the Harris campaign to find out exactly how the money was spent.
In total, the Harris campaign spent $1.2 billion, a record amount, compared to Donald Trump’s more modest $750 million. Despite this record spending, the campaign ended up $20 million in debt.
Among Harris’s many extravagances was the construction of a copycat studio for her Call Her Daddy appearance, at a cost of $100,000.
The set was built in a hotel room in Washington DC, so that Harris wouldn’t have to go to LA.
She also spent nearly $4 million to recruit social-media influences, $9,000 on ice cream and $15,000 in food-delivery. Travel on private jets cost the campaign $2.6 million.
