The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), representing hundreds of thousands of postal workers, has officially endorsed Kamala Harris.

In an official statement, the NALC said that it was throwing its support behind Harris and her running-mate Tim Walz because of their support for postal unions and workers.

“As a local prosecutor, state attorney general, senator, and vice president, Kamala Harris is a proven supporter of working families, organized labor, and the Postal Service,” the statement reads.

“As a senator, she was instrumental in advocating for essential relief for the Postal Service at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She served as vice president of the administration that signed the Postal Service Reform Act into law. She is a fierce defender of civil rights, voting rights, and our democratic system.”

The statement also notes that Tim Walz “is a union brother and veteran. He is a former public school teacher who has devoted his life to public service. As governor, he has kept working families at the forefront by enacting a paid family and medical leave program, child tax credits, and universal free school meals for all Minnesota students.”

Members of the NALC will be responsible for handling millions of mail-in ballots during the November election. Mail-in ballots were crucial to securing Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 election and are likely to play a key role in this year’s election too.

The New York Times has predicted a second “red mirage” this year, as early indications of a Republication victory due to in-person voting are reversed by a later wave of mail-in votes for the Democrat candidate.

“For the second straight presidential election, it is becoming increasingly likely that there will be no clear and immediate winner on election night and that early returns could give a false impression of who will ultimately prevail,” writes Nick Corasaniti.

“Large swaths of Americans have changed their voting habits in recent years, relying increasingly on mail-in ballots, which take more time to count than those cast in person on Election Day. States with prolonged vote-counting processes, such as Arizona, have become suddenly competitive. And the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump appears extremely close.”

The article goes on to describe how election officials are already doing their best to prepare voters to wait “days” for the result. In large part, this is being done to “counter conspiracy theorists who may seize on the uncertainty as evidence of fraud or malfeasance.”
