Authorities in the nation’s capital arrested a 12-year-old boy suspected of attempting to carry out an armed carjacking in broad daylight this week.

The disturbing incident unfolded just after 1 p.m. on Sunday in Washington D.C.

A female driver was approached by a young male at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and U Street.

The boy “demanded the victim’s keys while holding an object in his waistband that the victim believed was a firearm. The victim refused to give the property to the suspect, and the suspect fled on foot,” Metropolitan Police (MPDC) explained in a press release.

Officers quickly located the suspect and found him to be in possession of a firearm.

He was taken into custody and charged with armed carjacking with a gun and carrying a pistol without a license.

Carjackings have been surging in Washington D.C. in recent years.

Since January 1, MPDC has recorded at least 635 such crimes, a 101% increase over the same period last year.

At least 110 carjackings have taken place in the last 30 days alone.

In the majority of cases, a firearm is used in the commitment of a carjacking, despite D.C. having some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country.
