Telegram groups affiliated with Kataib Hezbollah both claimed and dispute that the attack was a response to the failure of talks to end the US-led military coalition operating in Iraq.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq appeared to claim responsibility for the attack, stating on Telegram that “what happened a short while ago is the beginning that must be escalated.” The group had given the Iraqi government three months to negotiate the departure of the two or so thousand US forces in the country.
Iranian-backed groups have intensified attacks on US bases in the region after the October 7 attacks in Israel. Yesterday’s attack is the first since February and comes a day after Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani returned to the country after visiting Joe Biden at the White House.
