A canvasser who went door-to-door campaigning for GOP candidates was attacked in a Florida neighborhood over the weekend, with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) blaming Democrats for the violence.
A photo shared by Rubio Monday showed the unconscious bloodied canvasser being hauled off on a stretcher and put in the back of an ambulance.
“Last night one of our canvassers wearing my T-shirt and a Desantis hat was brutally attacked by 4 animals who told him Republicans weren’t allowed in their neighborhood in #Hialeah #Florida,” Rubio tweeted.
“He suffered internal bleeding, a broken jaw & will need facial reconstructive surgery,” he added.
Twitter slapped the tweet with a label reading, “The following media includes potentially sensitive content.”

According to a police report obtained by ABC affiliate WPLG Local 10, police arrested 22-year-old Javier Lopez in connection to the attack.
“Upon arrival [the canvasser] stated that he was walking around the neighborhood handing out fliers when he came across the defendant who was blocking the sidewalk,” the report states.
Lopez reportedly approached the canvasser and told him “he could not pass through the sidewalk in front of his residence.”
As the canvasser tried to walk toward the street, Lopez allegedly told him “You can’t pass by here; this is my neighborhood.”

“This is public property and I can be here if I want to,” the canvasser told Lopez, according to the report.
“The defendant and the [victim] then began to have a verbal dispute at which time the defendant rushed towards the victim to grab him and proceeded to slam him against the floor,” reads the report.
The report claims another person arrived and tried to hit Lopez, but that he continued to “strike the [canvasser] multiple times with closed fists on the victim’s face causing him to have a severe swelling on the right side of his face and his right eye being completely shut from the damages.”
Lopez “continued striking the [victim] on his mouth causing a severe swelling and bleeding,” the report states.
Local 10 News claimed the Hialeah Police Department said there was “no indication” thus far the attack was politically motivated, but that they would wait for “the investigation to reveal that.”
Interestingly, despite Sen. Rubio publicizing the attack no major mainstream media news outlets have ventured to report on the incident, likely worried it will tarnish Democrats with just weeks left until the 2022 midterms.
