During a meeting on Tuesday with top Russian military officials, Kremlin Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Moscow has obtained intel that Ukraine is planning an attack on Crimea using NATO-supplied HIMARS rockets.
Russian-controlled Crimea has been annexed since 2014, but Shoigu vowed any strike using U.S. and U.K.-supplied missiles would be taken as a direct Western assault on the territory.
Shoigu said Tuesday, “The use of these missiles outside the zone of our special military operation would mean that the United States and Britain would be fully dragged into the conflict and would entail immediate strikes on decision-making centers in Ukraine.”
“The Kyiv regime is employing a large number of Western weapons and elite formations whose personnel have been trained by NATO specialists,” he added.
Former UN weapons inspector and American military veteran Scott Ritter, now an author and podcast host, discussed the Russian defense minister’s comments during a Tuesday broadcast.
“The West is going to have to come to grips with the reality of an inevitable Russian victory,” he said. “The question now is how to negotiate with the Russians and I think there is a difference between negotiating with a nation that has carried out an illegal war of aggression and negotiating with a nation that carried out a legitimate act of self-defense.”
Ritter placed the task of proving Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was warranted and was defensive on the shoulders of the Kremlin and Russian journalists.
During Ritter’s transmission, he described a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders of several African nations where he presented documents proving Ukraine withdrew from a peace negotiation after Russian forces backed off Kyiv.
