Victims on opposite U.S. coasts were injured by assailants wielding ‘samurai swords’ just hours apart this week, according to reports.
Suspects launched sword attacks on a man in New York City and a woman and her dog in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
Interestingly, both stories have bizarre and/or shocking plot twists.
On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Police Department was notified about an ‘attempted assault with a deadly weapon’ by a man brandishing a large blade in the Mid-Wildshire neighborhood just after 11 p.m., the New York Post reports.
Responding officers encountered 23-year-old Eric Herrera in the street and quickly neutralized him after he refused to drop the weapon, body cam footage shows.
Moments later, they found Herrera’s injured mother nearby.
“After taking the suspect into custody, officers located a victim suffering from stab wounds. Officers worked quickly to render emergency medical aid and care for the victim until paramedics arrived,” LAPD explained in a statement with an accompanying video of the arrest.
The 43-year-old woman, who had been slashed in the arm multiple times, was taken to hospital in stable condition.
“The unidentified family member also said the incident was all part of a family dispute in which the woman’s son attacked his mother,” KTLA reports.
“The young man had been troubled for quite some time before this incident occurred, the family member said.”
Hours earlier and 3,000 miles away, a suspect injured another man using a Japanese-style blade during a dispute in the New York City subway.
Two men were seen arguing on a train at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday before it pulled into a Manhattan station.
The dispute reportedly continued on the platform and then in the street.
The suspect reportedly pulled a sword and struck Lance Griffin, 29, in the head.
“As the men got off the train, the attacker — who was wearing an all-black outfit, hat and sunglasses — hit Griffin on top of the head with the encased weapon then dropped it and bolted,” the New York Post reports.
NYPD released video footage of the suspect fleeing the scene.

Incredibly, this was not the first time Griffin, the victim, has been in the news for subway-related crime.
Griffin is currently on parole for a 2019 bomb scare in which he placed rice cookers in a Manhattan train station.
“The devices were suspected of being pressure cooker bombs since they were left at the Fulton St. station near Williams St., which is adjacent to the Federal Reserve Bank. Turns out they were harmless,” the New York Daily News reports.
“Griffin, a West Virginia native who was homeless at the time, was found a few days later unconscious from a drug overdose in the Bronx.”
Griffin’s attacker was still on the loose at the time of this writing, according to the latest available updates.
