Jesus Ayala, the teenage driver accused of being behind the wheel of a vehicle that fatally struck a biker in Las Vegas, reportedly told cops he’d be out of jail for the offense in less than a month.
“You think this juvenile [expletive] is gonna do some [expletive]? I’ll be out in 30 days, I’ll bet you,” Ayala, 18, said in footage captured by police body-worn cameras, according to the Daily Mail.
“It’s just ah, [expletive] ah, hit-and-run — slap on the wrist,” Ayala reportedly told Las Vegas police when they confronted him, though they had not yet mentioned the accident to him.
Ayala and his accomplice Jzamir Keys, 16 – the passenger who filmed the incident as he egged on Ayala, then posted it to social media – appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court Thursday and were notified they’d be tried for murder as adults.
Ayala faces 18 charges stemming from the murder of 64-year-old Andreas Probst, a retired police chief with 35 years in law enforcement under his belt, who was out for a morning bike ride before he was plowed into by the reckless teens.
Local Las Vegas media outlet KSNV reports:
“Both Ayala and Keys are facing charges of open murder, attempted murder and battery with a deadly weapon. Ayala is facing 15 additional counts, including reckless driving resulting in death or substantial bodily harm.”
The pair were evidently on a crime spree on the morning of August 14, and also allegedly struck a 72-year-old man on a bike around 5:30 that morning who suffered non-life threatening injuries, in addition to ramming into another vehicle before hitting Probst.
“Police said the teens stole at least four cars to carry out the violent spree,” according to the New York Post.
Probst’s daughter, Taylor, at a press conference Wednesday stated, “We as a family in no way feel that Andy’s murder was based on race or profession,” adding, “It was a random act of violence. We ask you to not politicize or use Andy’s murder to fuel political agendas or to create cultural wars.”

Ayala reportedly showed no remorse when he was arrested, and Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said the teens would be deemed a flight risk and denied bail.
“I am confident that both these defendants will be charged with open murder, attempted murder, and many other related charges,” Wolfson said Thursday.
“They are a danger to the community, and when you are facing an open murder charge, that by definition makes you a flight risk,” he argued.
“A determination of whether someone should be held in custody is based upon whether they are a flight risk or danger to the community, okay? I believe they are potentially both. They have certainly proved that they are dangerous,” he added.
Discussing the charges against the passenger of the vehicle, Wolfson explained, “Under law in Nevada and most any other place, if you aid and abet, encourage, facilitate, or help in any way another person to commit a crime, you’re equally guilty… So even if the passenger may not have driven the vehicle, we believe under the evidence he is an aider and abettor and equally guilty.”
