Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) took issue with President Donald Trump’s proposals for the US to take control of Gaza and resettle Palestinians, saying the move contradicts promises to “Make America Great Again.”
“The pursuit for peace should be that of the Israelis and the Palestinians,” Paul wrote Wednesday morning, adding, “I thought we voted for America First.”
“We have no business contemplating yet another occupation to doom our treasure and spill our soldiers blood,” he added.
The Kentucky senator’s criticisms came in response to a post from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who declared late Tuesday, “Gaza MUST BE FREE from Hamas.”
“As @POTUS shared today, the United States stands ready to lead and Make Gaza Beautiful Again,” Rubio stated.
Rubio’s statement followed comments from Trump this week where he floated the notion of relocating Gazans to “a beautiful area.”
“All of them. We’re talking about probably a million [point] seven, maybe a million eight. But I think all of them. They’ll be resettled in areas where they can live a beautiful life and not be worried about dying every day,” Trump stated Tuesday during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Paul’s dissenting remarks align him with Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) and Thom Tillis (N.C.), who have voiced dissent and doubts over the plan.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia also rejected Trump’s idea, insisting the Palestinian people would stay in Gaza.
Asked Wednesday how the policy squares with Trump’s “America First” stance, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the US would not be putting boots on the ground in Gaza and would not be paid for by US taxpayers.

Time will tell whether Trump is serious about his Gaza relocation plan, or if he’s floating the proposal as a shrewd negotiation tactic.
