President-elect Donald Trump seized on the news that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was resigning to call for Canada to “merge” with the United States.
“Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned,” Trump wrote on X.
“If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them.”
“Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!” Trump added.
Trump for weeks has been chiding Canada with talk of annexing the country into becoming America’s 51st state led by “Governor” Trudeau, who had visited Mar-a-Lago last month for trade talks.
Trudeau on Monday announced he would step down as prime minister amid dissent within his Liberal Party.
“It has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau, the longest serving leader of any G7 nation, suspended Canada’s parliament until March 24 while his party appoints a new leader.
Polls show the Liberals trailing the opposition Conservatives ahead of the election on October 20.
