On Monday it was reported that President Donald Trump is preparing an executive order to dismantle the Department of Education. The move would be making good on a promise he made as President-elect.
“Trump administration officials are weighing executive actions to dismantle the Education Department as part of the campaign by billionaire Elon Musk and his allies to shrink federal agencies and slash the size of the government workforce,” the Wall Street Journal said.

“The officials have discussed an executive order that would shut down all functions of the agency that aren’t written explicitly into statute or move certain functions to other departments… The order would call for developing a legislative proposal to abolish the department… Trump’s advisers are still debating the specifics of the order and the timing,” the Wall Street Journal said.
Days after the election Trump vowed to dismantle the department.
“And one other thing I’ll be doing very early in the administration is closing up the Department of Education in Washington D.C. and sending all education and education work and needs back to the states,” Trump said in November. “We want them to run the education of our children, because they’ll do a much better job of it.”

“You can’t do worse. We spend more money per-pupil by three-times than any other nation. And yet we’re absolutely at the bottom. We’re one of the worst. So you can’t do worse,” Trump said in November. “We’re going to end education coming out of Washington D.C., we’re going to close it up.”
Sen. John Kennedy recently said that after USAID gets cut, the Department of Education will be next.
Senator John Kennedy: “To my friends who are upset, call somebody who cares. You better get used to this. It’s USAID today, it’s gonna be Department of Education tomorrow.”
