Former Vice President Mike Pence rebuked claims by President Donald Trump that he had the power to reject certification of electoral college votes.

Pence made the remarks during a speech at a Federalist Society event in Orlando, Florida, Friday.

“There are those in our party who believe that as the presiding officer over the joint session of Congress that I possessed unilateral authority to reject electoral college votes,” Pence said.

“I heard this week that President Trump said I had the right to overturn the election,” Pence said, adding, “President Trump is wrong.”

Pence continued, “I had no right to overturn the election. The presidency belongs to the American people and the American people alone, and frankly there is no idea more un-American than the notion that any one person could choose the American president. Under the Constitution, I had no right to change the outcome of our election, and Kamala Harris will have no right to overturn the election when we beat them in 2024.”

As vice president, Pence assumed the role of president of the Senate acting as presiding officer over the certification of the states’ electoral votes.

Meanwhile, Trump has asserted recent Democrat efforts to overhaul the Electoral Count Act of 1887 suggest he was correct and Pence DID have the authority to overturn the election.

In a statement last week, Trump wrote, “If the Vice President had ‘absolutely no right’ to change the Presidential Election results in the Senate, despite fraud and many other irregularities, how come the Democrats and RINO Republicans, like Wacky Susan Collins, are desperately trying to pass legislation that will not allow the Vice President to change the results of the election?”

In another statement, Trump accused Dems of lying while attempting to change the Electoral College Act.

“So pathetic to watch the Unselect Committee of political hacks, liars, and traitors work so feverishly to alter the Electoral College Act so that a Vice President cannot ensure the honest results of the election, when just one year ago they said that ‘the Vice President has absolutely no right to ensure the true outcome or results of an election.’ In other words, they lied, and the Vice President did have this right or, more pointedly, could have sent the votes back to various legislators for reassessment after so much fraud and irregularities were found.”

Infowars previously examined efforts by Dems to change the Electoral Count Act of 1887 (ECA):

The legislation, put forward by Democrats, deals with the Electoral Count Act of 1887 (ECA) and its guidelines for counting and certifying Electoral College votes after presidential elections.

For the past 135 years, the vice president has had the power of presiding over the Electoral College certification process.

The long-standing legislation became a focus of Democrats after Donald Trump tried to get then-Vice President Mike Pence to send back the votes for recertification or approval following the 2020 election.

The Democrat proposal seeks to change the law’s language to ensure the vice president’s role is limited only to “opening electoral vote ballots as required by the Constitution.”

Also included in the proposal is an increase in the number of lawmakers needed to object to a state’s presidential electors while also limiting the reasons they can object under.

The left is scrambling to “fix” an issue they claimed never existed in the first place!
