President Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill Act” cleared the House Budget Committee on Sunday night, by a vote of 17-16.
The Bill, if it passes the legislature, will extend President Trump’s tax cuts, provide funding for his immigration policies and reform Medicaid and food-assistance programs.
The four Republicans who halted the passage of the Bill on Friday—Reps. Ralph Norman, Chip Roy, Andrew Clyde and Josh Brecheen—all voted in favour of allowing it to continue; although they continued to express reservations about the Bill.
Speaker Mike Johnson was present for the vote, in a sign of its importance to the Trump administration. Johnson described the vote “as a big win tonight.”
“There’s a lot more work to do, we’ve always acknowledged that towards the end there will be more details to iron out, we have several more to take care of,” Johnson said.
“But I’m looking forward to very thoughtful discussions, very productive discussions over the next few days, and I am absolutely convinced we’re going to get this in final form and pass it in accordance with our original deadline, and that was to do it before Memorial Day.”
“So this will be a victory out of committee tonight, everybody will make a vote that allows us to proceed and that was my big request tonight.”
The Bill will now head to the House Rules Committee, which is likely to make further changes intended to appease critics, which may include more stringent requirements for Medicaid support and tweaks to the state and local tax deduction cap.
