The Ukrainian president has rejected an offer from the US Government to evacuate himself to safety, reportedly telling Washington he needs “ammunition, not a ride”.
Volodymyr Zelensky has remained Kyiv, as heavy fighting continues for control of the capital.
Mr Zelensky said yesterday that he was “target number one” for Russian forces advancing on the city, with Moscow planning to overthrow the Ukrainian Government and install a pro-Russian leadership.
The US is understood to have urged Mr Zelensky to evacuate and offered support in doing so – but the leader vowed to stay and fight.
Refusing the offer, he said: “the fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride,” a senior American intelligence official with direct knowledge of the conversation told AP news agency.
The source reportedly described the Ukrainian President as upbeat.
Mr Zelensky this morning shared another defiant video message confirming he was still in the capital, standing openly in the streets of the city.
