Ukraine Takes Credit for Russian General Assassination in Moscow

Ukraine opened a criminal investigation into Russian Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov the day before the attack which took his life, citing Western claims Russia has been using banned chemical weapons on the battlefield.

Russia claims it is Ukraine which has been deploying the chemical weapons.

On Tuesday Russian Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, head of the radiation, chemical and biological defense teams of the country’s armed forces was killed in an explosion in Moscow. Soon thereafter, an unnamed Ukrainian official took credit for the assassination.

“On Tuesday morning, an explosive device fatally injured Kiriloov, who led the radiation, chemical, and biological defense teams of the Russian armed forces. The Russian general was leaving his apartment when the device, which was planted inside a nearby parked scooter, exploded,” Remix News said Tuesday.

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) official who claimed responsibility for the attack did not reveal his identity, as he reportedly did not have clearance to release that information. The day before the attack the SBU opened a criminal investigation against Kirillov, accusing him of directing the use of banned chemical weapons.

“An official with the SBU said the agency was behind the attack. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information, described Kirillov as a ‘war criminal and an entirely legitimate target’,” the AP said Tuesday. “On Monday, Ukraine’s Security Service, or SBU, opened a criminal investigation against him, accusing him of directing the use of banned chemical weapons.”

The SBU claims it documented over 4,800 instances of Russia using banned chemical weapons in the war since February 2022 and the U.S. State Department claimed in May that Russia deployed chloropicrin, a poison gas first used in World War I against Ukrainian forces, according to the AP on Tuesday.

Russia claims it did not use the banned chemical weapons, stating that it was in fact Ukraine which deployed them, something Western publications, think tanks and government agencies have pushed back against.

“Russia’s state Investigative Committee said on Monday it was examining the alleged use of chemical weapons by Ukrainian forces near the eastern Ukrainian towns of Soledar and Bakhmut,” Reuters said on February 6, 2023. “Ukraine’s Armed Forces said they had never used chemical weapons anywhere at any time and accused Moscow of engaging in disinformation and of itself using banned weapons.”

An article which appeared in the RAND Corporation’s ‘research and commentary’ page on October 11 describe Russia as deflecting and denying the use of chemical weapons against Ukraine while the U.S. State Department described Russia’s claim as disinformation back in June.

Finger-pointing between the two embattled Slavic nations has not been limited to just the chemical weapons scandal. Infowars reported on Wednesday that both countries blame the other for a drone attack on a vehicle carrying International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) staff to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. No fatalities resulted from that attack.
