An American citizen was arrested when border agents caught him smuggling fentanyl into the U.S. via bicycle last week.

The bust unfolded at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday in El Paso, Texas.

The suspect was crossing the Paso Del Norte international bridge when a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer noticed “anomalies” in the bicycle the man was riding and referred him for secondary screening.

A CBP drug-sniffing dog “alerted to the presence of narcotics” and officers proceeded to scan the bike and detected multiple bundles hidden inside the frame.

While dismantling the bicycle, CBP found bundles containing .4 pounds of methamphetamine and .18 pounds of fentanyl – equivalent to roughly 40,000 lethal doses of the powerful opioid.

CBP officers arrested the 32-year-old man and turned him over to the Department of Homeland Security.

He is expected to faces charges of importation of a controlled substance.

Days earlier, CBP caught another U.S. citizen smuggling methamphetamine at the Ysleta international crossing in El Paso.

The 26-year-old man was found to be carrying two packages of meth totaling nearly one-third of a pound between his buttocks.
