US Strategic Command (STRATCOM) spokesman Rear Admiral Thomas Buchanan implied on Wednesday that the U.S. is ready to use nuclear weapons if necessary during statements he made at the Project Atom 2024 event at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
“General Cotton has designated 2024 as the year of action and 2025 now becomes the year of acceleration and we are moving out to that end,” Buchanan said Wednesday at 5:45 in the video.
He called nuclear war a ‘potential eventuality’.
“If and when directed by the President we are ready to prevail in conflict. Make no bones about it, that’s what our forces, your forces, the Air Force, Navy forces that make up the three legs of the triad do every day, prepare for that potential eventuality,” Buchanan said Wednesday at 5:00 in the video.
Buchanan made statements indicative of a world war.
“We can no longer compartmentalize the threats individually but we must be prepared to deter and confront them in-chorus across the spectrum of conflict,” Buchanan said Wednesday at 13:00 in the video.
He also stated that he believes that while we don’t want a nuclear exchange, if it happens it should be done as to the maximize the advantage of U.S. interests.
“We certainly don’t want to have an exchange,” Buchanan said Wednesday at 33:00 in the video. “If we have to have an exchange then we want to do it in terms that are most acceptable to the United States.”
The nuclear arsenal is ‘ready’ he stated.
“The nuclear deterrent is a ready force, it’s always ready,” Buchanan said Wednesday at 26:00 in the video.
