On Tuesday it was reported that the United States sided with Russia twice at the United Nations on resolutions related to Ukraine.
The first vote the U.S. sided with Russia with was a Western European-drafted resolution condemning Russia for its Special Military Operation in Ukraine and support for Ukraine keeping its territory the country had lost to Russia during the war. The U.S. did not vote to condemn Russia’s actions nor support Ukrainian ‘territorial integrity’.
The second resolution the U.S. voted for was one it had drafted itself. It was made at the U.N. Security Council and called for an end to the Ukraine war while containing no criticism of Russia. That resolution passed the Security Council despite lacking support from the U.K. and France, which abstained after their attempts to amend the wording were vetoed.
These moves rebuke the world order which was established anew following the outcome of the Second World War. The shakeup comes as President Donald Trump prioritizes peace over war and negotiation over possible nuclear armageddon. While these moves do not necessitate the breakup of the 80-year-old world order, the Western European decision to choose Ukraine over the U.S. due to a deep-seeded hatred of Russia destabilized the previous rock-solid political friendship.
“Trump’s White House has upended the transatlantic alliance, currying favour with Moscow and casting doubt on America’s long-term commitment to European security. That rift was laid bare on the floor of the 193-member UNGA on Monday as U.S. diplomats pushed their limited resolution mourning the loss of life during the ‘Russia-Ukraine conflict’ and calling for a swift end to it,” the BBC said Tuesday. “European diplomats tabled a more detailed text, blaming Russia for its full-scale invasion, and supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
Perhaps in an attempt to have their cake and eat it too, the post-WWII vestige of the European Union issued its own mineral deal to Ukraine following Trump’s original mineral deal. The move may be seen as an attempt to undermine the actions of the U.S. in its attempt to bring the war to an end.
“The European Union offered its own agreement on ‘critical materials’ to Ukraine on Monday, just as U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Washington was close to inking a deal with Kiev for the rights to its vast natural resources,” Politico said Tuesday.
While both the U.S. and Russia are siding on geopolitical resolutions, they are both pushing for Ukraine to hold elections in a bid to remove Dictator Vladimir Zelensky. Ukrainian politicians appear to have other ideas in mind, as on Tuesday they voted to reaffirm the Dictator’s legitimacy following European leaders meeting in the corrupt country to bribe Ukrainian leaders with money.
