Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) stunned a congressional hearing Tuesday when he read aloud from pornographic books available in public school libraries.
The incident unfolded during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Illinois’ new anti-book ban law, which threatens libraries that ban books with a cut in state funding and requires libraries adhere to the Chicago-based American Library Association’s (ALA) Library Bill of Rights.
Sen. Kennedy used his speaking time to expose disturbing sexual passages from the books, Genderqueer, and All Boys Aren’t Blue, both of which are on the ALA’s list of approved books for public schoolchildren.
The passages are too pornographic to print here, but rest assured Sen. Kennedy’s point came across quite graphically.
“Now, Mr. Secretary, what are you asking us to do?” Sen. Kennedy asked Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias. “Are you suggesting that only librarians should decide whether the two books that I just referenced should be available to kids? Is that what you’re saying?”
“With all due respect Senator, the words you spoke are disturbing, especially coming out of your mouth, is very disturbing,” Giannoulias acknowledged, going on to claim the state was not advocating for children to read porn.
“I’m saying when you’re making…when individual parents are allowed to make a decision of what, where that line is, and To Kill a Mockingbird, which involves a rape scene, ‘Should that book be pulled from our libraries?’ I think it becomes a slippery slope,” Giannoulias responded.
Kennedy next addressed anti-book ban advocate Cameron Samuels who claimed “book review committees in the community” would decide what books are appropriate for students.
“None of them want to answer my question. You come here and you say ‘censorship is bad,’ and of course it’s bad,” Sen. Kennedy shot back. “But the obvious response is okay you heard the books we’re talking about, okay? We’re not talking about Catcher in the Rye. So tell me what you want, who gets to decide, and all I’ve heard is the librarians, and parents have nothing to do with it, and if that’s your response, what planet did you just parachute in from? Or what country, more appropriately. This is not China.”
Sen. Kennedy’s impressive defense of parents’ rights to keep pornographic LGBTQ+ books out of their children’s libraries is just one example of why he’s endeared by conservatives.
