President Donald Trump told Newsmax on Wednesday that he will push for a federal investigation into a Capitol Officer’s summary execution of pro-Trump demonstrator Ashli Babbitt during the J6 protest.
Speaking to Newsmax host Greg Kelly inside the White House, Trump said he was extremely familiar with Babbitt and questioned the circumstances behind her murder, adding he was unaware of the DOJ’s pushback against her family, who are pursuing a $30 million wrongful death lawsuit.

“Well, I’ll look into that,” Trump said, adding, “I mean, you’re just telling me that for the first time, I haven’t heard that.”
“I’m a big fan of Ashli Babbitt. And Ashli Babbitt was a really good person who was a big MAGA fan, Trump fan. And she was innocently standing there; they even say trying to sort of hold back the crowd. And a man did something to her that was unthinkable when he shot her. And I think it’s a disgrace. I’m going to look into that. I did not know that.”
The president went on to label the justice system’s clearing of Lt. Michael Byrd, the capitol officer who shot Babbitt, a “disgrace.”
“I’m going to take a look at it. I’m going to look at that, too. His reputation was … I won’t even say; let’s find out about his reputation. We’re going to find out,” he said.
“But I watched that and I saw that. And by the way, she was killed, but nobody else was killed.”
Last September, a federal judge green-lit the Babbitt estate’s lawsuit seeking $30 million in damages for the “intentional shooting and killing of Ashli by Lt. Michael Byrd.”
Former Infowars correspondent Sam Montoya was on-the-scene when the incident unfolded, and was one of the only members of the press to capture footage of Babbitt’s brutal murder at the hands of the Capitol officer.
A hearing on the lawsuit is scheduled for July 20, 2026.
