The AP reported Tuesday evening that 180 people died as a result of Hurricane Helene, however a source on-the-ground has reported that the true number of dead tops 1,000.
Investigative journalist Ann Vandersteel reported on social media Wednesday evening that one source who is on-location reported to her that he personally pulled 1,200 dead bodies out of the river following the massive flooding from the storm. Later Wednesday evening Vandersteel expounded on that report, indicating her source is a Sheriff.
Theoretically, the source may have accidentally typed an extra ‘0’ in the number when he reported it to Vandersteel, yet even if that was the case, him personally pulling out 120 bodies on his own indicates the official death numbers are likely lower than they are in reality.
The initial post was hit with an X ‘Community Note’, indicating the official numbers.

One man pulled 1200 bodies out of the river in Marshall and bagged them himself.
Thankfully communities and neighbors banding together.
-People keeping an eye on strangers scoping the area.
-Looting in Asheville is real. Knives and guns pulled onâŚ
“The local news is underreporting the fatality count stating only 160 bodies have been recovered to date. I reported that a sheriff personally pulled and bagged over 1200 bodies out of a rivers and from the side of roads,” she said in the second post.
MISSION HOSPITAL NURSE REPORT

Hurricane Helene Dispatch
I just spoke with a registered nurse who wishes to remain anonymous. She works at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.
She has been working every night at hospital since last Tuesday and tonight is her first⌠pic.twitter.com/wymsdLu4PI
The second post detailed a dire situation unfolding at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. Another one of Vandersteel’s sources, a nurse who’s worked every night for a week since the storm ravaged the area, told her that people are coming in off the streets to steal food, patients are piling up in the hallways due to a lack of beds and are not receiving much care due to a lack of staff and supplies.
“Upon leaving her long shift yesterday morning – my source saw that there was a line out door of people waiting to get in. She witnessed a patient in a wheelchair slumped over and left in the middle of the road. The nurse also witnessed a man on stretcher with a neck brace, and watched the medical team pick him up, transfer the patient to a wheelchair and just left him there with no further care,” Vandersteel said in a post Wednesday night. “Currently there are no beds for people in Mission Hospital ER – they are keeping patients in the hallway. They canât discharge anyone as once the patient is on the floor, you canât get them out. This is a result of no gas in cars, no one to transport the patient and home meds are not available to them at this time. The hospital is only providing critical meds to them, and only for 5 days at at time.”
Perhaps more alarmingly, a neighboring lunatic asylum had its electronic door locks fail due to the power outage. Patients have escaped and are now on the loose. Doors now must be guarded by security staff.
Vandersteel’s source reported that she’s heard from other medical staff that people off the streets have allegedly shown up with guns demanding food.
“Due to the security risk of unknown people just showing up for food and shelter, the behavioural health hospital is only allowing 1 visitor / patient because according to a security guard who spoke to my nurse source (hearsay) people are showing up with guns to get food,” Vandersteel said in a post Wednesday night.
The flooding from Helene has resulted in numerous shocking videos from the affected region.
Itâs absolutely horrifying what our fellow Americans are going through.
