WTF: FEMA, Top Maui Emergency Officials Held Disaster Training Meeting on Different Island as Lahaina Wildfire Raged

Meeting attended by 'who's who of disaster response' took place as fires began unfolding on island of Maui.

Moreover, officials at meeting actually discussed wildfires that by that time were already impacting Lahaina, about a half-hour plane ride away.

Several top emergency officials in Maui, Hawaii, and members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) attended a disaster preparedness meeting on the island of Oahu the day the Lahaina wildfires broke out.

According to the Daily Mail:

Dozens of senior bureaucrats were gathering on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, on the island of Oahu, on August 8 for the annual meeting of FEMA coordinators in the Pacific region.

The meeting attended by the “who’s who of disaster response,” as described by Hawaii News Now (HNN), took place as fires began unfolding on the island of Maui, with the first fire starting early that morning.

Conference participants included FEMA Region IX Regional Administrator Robert Fenton, Division Disaster Executive for the American Red Cross Denise Everhart, Hawaii Emergency Management Agency administrator James Barros, and the Hawaii National Guard Adjutant General MG Kenneth Hara.

“The agenda listed 74 attendees at this year’s Pacific Partnership Meeting including FEMA leadership and several members of the Center for Homeland Defense and Security,” reports HNN.

“HNN Investigates confirmed the head of Maui County’s Emergency Management Agency [Herman Andaya, who led the Maui wildfire emergency response] was also on hand,” the local news outlet added.

Andaya resigned in disgrace last week amid criticism citing “health reasons.”

Moreover, officials at the meeting actually discussed the wildfires that by that time were already impacting Lahaina, about a half-hour plane ride away.

“There were consultations about the fires among local, state and FEMA participants,” FEMA spokesperson John Mills told HNN.

HNN says they asked county and state officials “who was left in charge while those local emergency officials attended the meeting,” however their requests for comment went unanswered.

The Daily Mail notes there was a long delay between the time the fires broke out and the time the first emergency call was held at around 11AM.

The Mail reports the fires were erroneously declared contained at 9AM.

Despite the emergency conference call happening at 11AM, Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke, acting governor that day, didn’t issue an emergency declaration or an evacuation order until 3:21PM.

Given local and federal officials had several hours of advance notice about the fires, the absence of sirens to alert residents about the impending threat to life is even more perplexing.

News of the coincidental emergency preparedness conference follows news FEMA agents dispatched to manage the government’s response have been shacking up at $1000-a-night rooms in beachfront resorts, while many Lahaina wildfire victims are still without homes.

It also comes as social media users have expressed concerns over potential conflicts of interest and a lack of transparency after it was revealed Maui Police Chief John Pelletier – who previously worked as incident commander during the Las Vegas massacre – also serves as the island’s coroner.
