Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized partygoers and revelers within his country who are undermining the narrative that Ukraine is in the battle for its survival against Russia.
On Monday, Zelensky issued a statement condemning citizens of his own country who, by living their best lives, are compromising his efforts to secure more financial support from the US government and other allies.
“We’re at war,” Zelensky told the revelers, adding, “The ones not fighting at the front, should help those who do to fight! Not sitting in bars or clubs, or raving in the streets.”
The Ukraine president’s words come as multiple videos have emerged on social media in recent weeks showing Ukraine citizens partying at clubs, bars and raves without a care in the world, shattering the narrative Ukraine is under attack and needs billions more of US taxpayers’ dollars.
One video uploaded to X by user Dom Lucre received a “Community Note” info box, not because his video contained misinformation, but because Kyiv is far from where the war is being fought.
“Kyiv is about 500km/310mi from the nearest active front line – far from being ‘war torn’ – though there are nightly air raid alerts due to attacks,” the community note stated, adding, “Footage of people trying to live a normal life is frequently used by pro-Russian publishers to discourage western aid.”
The videos come as US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Tuesday called on Congress to send an additional $24.1 billion in support of Ukraine.
