I travelled to Europe on September 14, 2001, originally intending to produce a documentary for Radio New Zealand on the then burgeoning, but hard to define, anti-globalisation movement. My three-week trip was somewhat disrupted by the 9/11 attacks in New York just a few days prior to my departure.
I flew west to Europe rather than east across, by then closed, US airspace and was one of the first to witness firsthand the wave of new travel and security restrictions that swept the globe in the wake of the twin towers tragedy.
Many of those I had intended to interview in Britain, Ireland, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland cancelled. I returned to New Zealand from London on the night the bombing of Afghanistan began which resulted in a detour through India and a 14-hour extension to my flight home.
