[efoods]People across the country showered a small-town Kentucky eye doctor with cash on Thursday to help finance his GOP primary race for U.S. Senate.

Rand Paul, son of former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, called on cyberspace supporters to help him meet a single-day fundraising goal of $1 million. By mid-afternoon, he had banked more than $300,000, pushing his overall total since May to more than $500,000.

“I think it shows we’re a formidable force,” Paul said Thursday evening, though he was still well short of his goal. “I think we’re within striking distance of winning this race without having campaigned that much.”

Paul, an ophthalmologist from Bowling Green, borrowed the fundraising idea from his father, a Texas congressman who banked $6 million in a single day for his presidential campaign last year.
