The emerging narrative in the Las Vegas shooting now includes Alex Jones.

Raw Story, a liberal news blog, has placed Jones at the center of the controversy. “Jerad Miller outlined his political views, which were largely based on conspiracy theories promoted by Fox News and Alex Jones, in his social media postings, and he posted frequently about firearms and violent revolution,” writes Travis Gettys.

Jones and the liberty movement will now be implicated in the murder of police officers by way of insinuation. This is a repeated pattern.

In 2009, following the shooting death of three officers in Pittsburgh by Richard Poplawski, the corporate media attempted to affix blame on Jones.

“Believing most media were covering up important events, Mr. Poplawski turned to a far-right conspiracy Web site run by Alex Jones, a self-described documentarian (sic) with roots going back to the extremist militia movement of the early 1990s,” Dennis R. Roddy wrote for Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Muriel Kane, writing for Raw Story, and Eric Boehlert’s blog on the Media Matters website referenced the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette story in an effort to connect Alex Jones to the shooting.

The ADL subsequently attempted to link Poplawski to comments posted on

“A search of the comments section on Infowars, Prison Planet, and the Prison Planet forum produces zero matches for Poplawski’s handle, ‘Braced for Fate.’ A search of his name also produces no results. However, a Google search of the quote used in the ADL article produces a comment posted to Infowars that matches the one in the ADL article under the handle ‘P O Status’ with an email containing ‘Richp,’ the name cited by the media,” we reported on April 6, 2009.

It later emerged that Poplawski had openly criticized Jones’ anti-racist political viewpoint.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was obliged to clarify its reporting and Raw Story issued a retraction on its story linking Jones to the shooting.

Daily Kos, a liberal forum, also issued a clarification:

Based on a correction/retraction on RawStory, I have reason to doubt the information reported by the ADL with respect to Alex Jones and Infowars or PrisonPlanet. In fact, evidence points to the contrary; that Alex Jones has spoken strongly against hate speech similar to that spoken by Richard Poplawski. Therefore, in fairness, I’ve removed any references in this diary with respect to Alex Jones and the websites Infowars or PrisonPlanet.

The same sequence of events are likely to unfold following the latest attempt to link Jones and to the shooting in Las Vegas.
