After the White House threatened escalating “actions” if Russia continues its military campaign in Syria, Russia warned the U.S. is prepared to “ally with terror” to overthrow Assad.
In response to the Syrian government’s renewed effort backed by Russian air power to recapture Aleppo, the White House has threatened unspecified “actions” to punish Russia for not yielding to demands to halt its military campaign.
“While we have not and will not detail all of our tactics, there are a number of actions the U.S. and our partners are considering that would further underscore the consequences of not coming back to the negotiating table,” a White House official told NBC.
For its part, Russia has suggested the U.S. will use the collapse of a recent ceasefire as justification to “forge an alliance with hardened terrorists, dreaming of turning back the course of history” to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
“We are becoming more convinced that in a pursuit of a much desired regime change in Damascus, Washington is ready to ‘make a deal with the devil,’” said the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Apparently concerned the U.S. will use its own air power to target Syrian government forces, Russia has deployed the advanced SA-23 Gladiator/Giant anti-missile and anti-aircraft system to Syria; the deployment is notable as it marks the first time the system has been positioned anywhere outside Russia itself.
NBC has joined the rest of the mainstream media in promoting an American military campaign against Syrian and Russian forces.
“Any U.S. military strikes – to destroy regime aircraft, for example, or cripple runways – would risk killing Russian troops or advisors, potentially prompting an escalation,” wrote Ken Dilanian and Courtney Kube for NBC, “Yet some officials point out that Russia already is bedeviling the U.S. at every turn.”
“Russia has been seeking to manipulate the U.S. presidential election through leaks and hacks. U.S. personnel have been beaten up in Russia and allegedly drugged. Russian planes have flown dangerously close to U.S. ships,” they added.
The establishment’s increasingly forceful rhetoric comes after Russia’s embassy in Damascus was shelled by Al-Nusra and Faylaq al-Rahman militants based in the nearby municipality of Jobar.
“We view this shelling of the Russian embassy as a consequence of actions of those who, like the US and its allies, provoke the violent conflict in Syria, flirting with militants and extremists of different sorts,” said the Russian Foreign Ministry.
