A recent story by the Financial Times confirms something many of us have known for years—Daesh, aka the Islamic State, was created in part by the Saudis.
According to the late Saudi foreign minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, IS was cobbled together in response to the Shia government in Iraq following the US invasion of the country and the execution of Saddam Hussein (who got his start as a CIA operative).
“Daesh is our [Sunni] response to your support for the Da’wa,” the Shia Islamist ruling party of Iraq, al-Faisal told US Secretary of State John Kerry, according to the newspaper.
The FT story, however, ignores the fact the Saudis collaborated with the CIA and Pakistani intelligence to create the progenitor of the Islamic State, the “Afghan Arabs” that would become al-Qaeda. Other factions of the CIA organized and Saudi funded Mujahideen coalesced into another fanatical Wahhabi group, the Taliban.
The Saudis may have funded and supported IS, but they are not responsible for its creation. The Pentagon created a group led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi that would become IS.
In January 2006, al-Qaeda in Iraq merged with several other Sunni Wahhabi groups to form ad-Dawlah al-ʻIraq al-Islāmiyah, which translates as the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI). In 2013, the group moved into Syria and became ad-Dawlah al-Islāmiyah fī ‘l-ʿIrāq wa-sh-Shām, or ISIS. Following the invasion, the Pentagon developed a multi-billion dollar campaign to combat indigenous Iraqi groups fighting against the occupation. Part of this effort was the deliberate magnification of al-Zarqawi, at the time a marginal figure in the resistance who formed an al-Qaeda breakaway group. An internal Pentagon document states ”the Zarqawi PSYOP program is the most successful information campaign to date.”
A leaked Pentagon document states “there is the possibility of establishing a declared or undeclared Salafist Principality in eastern Syria (Hasaka and Der Zor), and this is exactly what the supporting powers to the opposition want, in order to isolate the Syrian regime.” The document is proof the DIA was actively working with Salafist groups, including the Islamic State.
The so-called “missing 28-pages” allegedly prove Saudi complicity in the 9/11 attacks but, as we noted on April 11, will not show the role played by the CIA. The same can be said for the creation of the Afghan Mujahideen, al-Qaeda, ISIS and the Islamic State. The Saudis, while assuredly complicit, will be used as a scapegoat to cover up the role played by the CIA and Pentagon in the creation of the terrorist groups.
