Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the man responsible for driving the investigation into the authenticity of president Obama’s birth certificate says he is not going to give up on the matter.
The law enforcer from Maricopa County made the remarks in a speech to a group that spearheaded the ‘birther’ movement, The Surprise Tea Party Patriots, on Tuesday, according to a report out of The Arizona Republic.
“I don’t know how it’s going to turn out.” Arpaio told the crowd, adding “I don’t care where he’s from, we are looking at a forged document. Period.”
Arpaio distanced himself from GOP nominee Donald Trump’s remarks on the matter last week. Trump said that he believes the matter is closed and that Obama was born in the United States.
“I had nothing to do with Trump on the birth certificate,” Arpaio said, adding “We did it on our own, because of you guys.”
Trump also stated last week that it was Hillary Clinton’s aides who blew up the birther issue in 2008 as part of a strategy when running against Obama for the Democratic nomination.
Mike Zullo, Arpaio’s right hand man on the investigation also spoke at the event, telling those gathered that Trump’s comments were a “punch in the gut, because it was unexpected.”
“It’s not going to deter us,” Zullo said. “It’s not going to stop us. I am closer than ever.” he added, describing Trump’s comments as “strategic.”
“I know all the politicians say, ‘Sheriff, don’t talk about it,’ ”Arpaio said Tuesday.
“But how can I back down when we started it? I’m not going to just forget it.” the Sheriff urged.
