Around 25,000 people have been urged to avoid using water after an alert was issued over a toxic spill from a Mexican copper mine.

A flyover of the Sonora River basin shows an abnormal orange stain, according to Carlos Arias, civil protection director for Sonora state.

Mr Arias added his department is taking measures to make sure people or livestock do not come into contact with the water until it is tested.

Grupo Mexico, the company that operates the Buenavista copper mine in the city of Cananea, has yet to identify the leaked substance.
