More than 218,000 Syrian refugees crossed into Europe in the month of October – more than the entire year of 2014, according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). That’s not only a record monthly number, but it represents more migrants than last year.

The Associated Press quoted UNHCR spokesman Adrian Edwards as saying it is “beyond anything that could have been expected even a few months ago.”

According to UNHCR, “210,265 people crossed the sea from Turkey to Greece last month,” and “a further 8,129 went from north Africa to Italy in the period to Oct. 29.” It “estimates about 216,000 people crossed the Mediterranean last year, while some 3,000 crossed Turkey’s land border.”
