Western oil workers in Saudi Arabia are at risk of being attacked or kidnapped by terrorists, the US Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia said.
“The US Embassy has information stating that, as of early March, individuals associated with a terrorist organization could be targeting Western oil workers, possibly to include those US citizens working for oil companies in the Eastern Province, for an attack(s) and/or kidnapping(s),” a security message for US citizens posted online on Friday said.
The warning did not provide further details on the identity of the terrorists, timing and methods of the possible attacks.
The message was issued amid growing concern over the security of Westerners in Saudi Arabia since they have reportedly been targets of at least four attacks since October 2014.
The latest attacks occurred in February, when two US employees of Vinnell Arabia military company were shot at in Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia known as a home to most of Saudi Arabia’s oil production.
The attacks followed September’s Saudi Arabia’s decision to participate in the US-led international coalition’s airstrikes against the Islamic State (ISIL) jihadist group positions.
The foreigners’ security in the province is also endangered due to occasional clashes between the Shiite minority with Saudi police officers.
