The killing of a 14-year-old by police at an anti-government protest in Venezuela has been condemned by a state watchdog as a “vile assassination”.

The shooting, during clashes in the western city of San Cristobal, is set to further fuel tensions amid an economic crisis and a crackdown on the political opposition.

A photo and video of the student, named as Kluiver Roa, lying in a pool of blood as a man frantically tried to save him while people screamed in horror, was rapidly circulated on social media.Prosecutors say a police officer, Javier Mora, 23, is to be charged after he confessed to shooting the teenager with a shotgun which fires rubber bullets.
