Four Americans are missing after being assaulted and kidnapped in northeastern Mexico, near the Texan border.
The Americans were fired upon by unidentified gunmen soon after they drove into the border city of Matamoros, Mexico, home of the Gulf Cartel, according to the FBI.
Footage circulating online purports to show the Americans being rounded up and loaded onto a truck:
“All four Americans were placed in a vehicle and taken from the scene by armed men,” the release said, which didn’t identify the victims.
The victims were driving a white minivan with North Carolina license plates, the FBI added.
The abduction is particularly concerning given that Matamoros hugs the border next to Brownsville, Texas.
The violence is so bloody that the Biden State Dept. has even issued a travel advisory telling Americans not to travel to Tamaulipas state, where Matamoros is located.
“Organized crime activity – including gun battles, murder, armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, forced disappearances, extortion, and sexual assault – is common along the northern border and in Ciudad Victoria,” the State Dept. reported. “Criminal groups target public and private passenger buses, as well as private automobiles traveling through Tamaulipas, often taking passengers and demanding ransom payments.”
“Heavily armed members of criminal groups often patrol areas of the state and operate with impunity particularly along the border region from Reynosa to Nuevo Laredo.”
