Tech magnate John McAfee was found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona just hours after a Spanish court approved his extradition to the U.S. on tax evasion charges, according to reports.

Authorities in Madrid told national media that the 75-year-old McAfee antivirus founder was found dead in his cell at the Brians 2 Penitentiary Centeron on Wednesday and are investigating further, but are already claiming “death by suicide.”

“The judicial procession has traveled to the prison and is investigating the causes of death. Everything indicates that it could be a death by suicide,” the doctors who examined McAfee said in a statement.

Spain’s National Court had approved the extradition of McAfee to the United States just hours earlier, where he could have potentially served a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

Earlier this month, McAfee had argued to the court via videolink that his extradition was politically motivated and that returning to the U.S. would mean he would spend the rest of his life in prison.

“In late 2018, I announced I would run again and I also announced I would target the IRS and its corruption and two months later the IRS filed charged against me,” he told the Spanish High Court during the first hearing of his extradition trial.

“I believe the charges are politically motivated,” he said, adding “the United States wants to use me as an example.”

“I am hoping that the Spanish court will see the injustice of this,” McAfee said.

The software tycoon was arrested at Barcelona’s international airport in October over charges that he evaded taxes and willfully failed to file returns.

In one of his final tweets, McAfee claimed he “regrets nothing” despite having his remaining assets seized by the U.S. government.

In 2016, he ran as a Libertarian presidential candidate but lost out to Gary Johnson.

McAfee was an eccentric multimillionaire, a staunch anti-authority figure and an enemy of Big Tech and Big Government.
