Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) appeared to suffer a medical emergency during a press conference Wednesday, prompting concerns over the 81-year-old statesman’s health.
McConnell abruptly stopped talking during a press event in Covington, Kentucky, after he asked a reporter to repeat a question, which coincidentally had to do with the senator running for re-election.
“What am I talking about? What?” McConnell asked out loud, to which a reporter replied, “Running for re-election in 2026.”
The elderly senator acknowledged the topic at hand, but he went on to stand in silence for about 10 seconds instead of providing an answer..
An aide abruptly came to McConnell’s side asking, “Did you hear the question, senator? Running for re-election in 2026?” However, he did not offer a response.
“All right, I’m sorry, you all. We’re going to need a minute,” the aide told the press.
More from CNBC:
After his aide loudly repeated the question into his ear, McConnell said, “I think the governor’s race is going to be very close,” with his voice lowering in volume as he finished his reply.
He brushed off a final question about former President Donald Trump’s latest indictment in Georgia before being led away from the lectern.
The incident prompted the term “retire” to trend on the X social media platform, with users on the left and right side of the political spectrum calling on the octogenarian to step away from politics.
This is McConnell’s second public medical incident in as many months.
McConnell froze last month also, staring off blankly for 20 seconds during a press conference at the Capitol before colleagues stepped in to usher him away from the podium.
The incidents underscore the need to institute congressional term limits.
