The U.S. government was the greatest progenitor of disinformation during the COVID pandemic, according to Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.).
Paul made the remarks in a scathing speech condemning the Department of Homeland Security during a hearing on the agency’s budget on Tuesday.
“The most significant source of disinformation during the pandemic with the most influence and greatest impact on people’s lives was the U.S. government. The greatest purveyor of disinformation has been the U.S. government,” Paul said during the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing.

“All of this was occurring during the greatest national security threat to our nation in modern history. A global pandemic that killed millions of Americans. During that time, the Department of Homeland Security, working to determine the origins of COVID-19 pandemic and whether taxpayer funding went into conducting risky research in China — was this going on? To our knowledge, no.”
“Where did the virus come from? If it came from a lab, wouldn’t it be a biosecurity threat?” he continued. “Isn’t that somehow in the purview of the DHS to be looking at where the virus might have come from? At least several intelligence agencies have now concluded that it did come from there.”
Paul said the DHS was instead more focused on monitoring and censoring the American people’s free speech than protecting the homeland.
“Instead of focusing on real threats like this, DHS was internally strategizing on how it can expand social media censorship of Americans using third-party non-profits as, in the words of a CISA official who said, ‘a clearing house for information to avoid the appearance of government propaganda,’” he said.
Paul’s speech comes amid the release of a bombshell Senate report concluding COVID originated from the Wuhan lab in China.
“This report concludes most likely this was two leaks,” Sen. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) said during a briefing with reporters ahead of the release of the report. “The possibility of a lab leak in the September-October [2019] time frame, even as early as July or August, was followed by vaccine development in November 2019. And then another lab leak seems to be the most sensible explanation in this retrospective review.”
The report destroys the lies by Dr. Anthony Fauci, Bill Gates, World Heath Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus that COVID originated from a wet market in Wuhan, China.
