Far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is apparently concerned she may be in legal jeopardy.
AOC penned what The Hill called a “highly unusual” letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday asking if she’s the target of a Justice Department investigation, after receiving repeated criticism from “Border Czar” Tom Homan for hosting a webinar informing illegal aliens how to evade deportation agents.
Homan last month said that AOC may have violated federal laws for hosting the “Know Your Rights” seminar, but the congresswoman insists she was well within her First Amendment rights.
“It has been 14 days since Mr. Homan first threatened to weaponize your agency, but I have not yet heard any referral from the federal government,” she wrote. “Homan’s actions undercut core Constitutional rights and further transparency is necessary.”
AOC went on to accuse Homan of using the DOJ “to politically intimidate duly elected officials,” which she called a “textbook threat to the right to free speech in the United States.”
“Threatening criminal proceedings for exercising the First Amendment is itself a violation of the First Amendment,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
“Educating the public about their rights, especially in a time of rising uncertainty, is a key part of our responsibility as elected officials,” she continued. “A government that uses threats of DOJ investigations to suppress free speech is a threat to all, regardless of political ideology.”
The DOJ has not yet responded to AOC’s inquiry as of this writing.
