A home invasion ended poorly for a suspected burglar when he was shot dead by a resident last week in Southern California, according to reports.
The harrowing incident unfolded just after 7 p.m. on Monday night in Oceanside, a city in San Diego County.
The Oceanside Police Department (OPD) was alerted about a shooting at a private residence and when they arrived, they found a male suspect suffering from a gunshot wound, Fox 5 reports.
CPR was administered but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities learned the man, who was carrying a rock and a large wooden stake, had entered the residence via a sliding door that led to a room where a woman was sleeping.
A male resident then confronted the suspect and was hit in the face with a rock.
The victim grabbed a handgun and fired off multiple rounds, at least one of which struck the suspect in the chest.
“The suspect may have tried to enter at least one other home, by throwing a rock through a sliding glass window of that residence, causing the glass to shatter. It was not determined if the suspect did enter the residence and those residents were not home at the time,” a OPD spokeswoman explained in a statement.
“The suspect threw a rock at a male resident of the home, striking him in the face. The male resident retrieved a firearm and shot the suspect.”
