A reporter pressed Ontario Premier Doug Ford Friday on why he decided to vacation if Ottawa was reportedly under “siege” by the “insurrectionist” trucker Freedom Convoy, as described by police.

“There’s been a lot of questions about you and your visibility,” CTV reporter Colin D’Mello told Ford.

“Premier, CTV News has obtained photos of you in cottage country. We’ve spoken with people who took pictures with you who say you were snowmobiling on Saturday, premier.”

“Can you explain why you decided to go snowmobiling during a stated ‘insurrection’ and ‘siege’ in Ottawa?” the reporter asked, destroying the narrative that the truckers represented a dangerous threat.

Ford ignored the reporter’s question and instead responded that he speaks with high-level government officials during all hours of the day.

“Fair enough, but you’re not dismissing what I’m saying here. I’m asking you premier, were you snowmobiling on Saturday in cottage country while Ottawa was ‘under siege,’ as you say?” D’Mello followed up.

This time, Ford admitted, “I was at the cottage. I went out on my snowmobile,” adding, “I take calls til one o’clock in the morning. I get calls before six o’clock in the morning.”

The press conference followed an announcement by Ford declaring a state of emergency in Ontario and saying he’d convene a cabinet to discuss ways to “use legal authorities to urgently enact orders” to keep critical infrastructure intact.

“We’re now two weeks into the siege of the city of Ottawa,” he told the press. “I call it a siege because that’s what it is. It’s an illegal occupation.”

“Let me be as clear as I can: There will be consequences for these actions, and they will be severe,” Ford said.

“We’ve already started by going after the money funding the illegal occupation,” Ford added. “Yesterday, an Ontario court granted our request to freeze the funds from GiveSendGo for the convoy.”

“My message to those still in Ottawa, to those at our border crossings: Please go home,” he said. “To those of you who have brought your children, please take them home. I urge you, it’s time to leave.”

“Your right to make a political statement does not outweigh the right of thousands of workers to make a living.”

Ford also declared police would begin issuing “severe fines” to truckers “for non-compliance” ranging upwards of $100,000, adding they could also face up to a year in prison.

“This is a pivotal, pivotal moment for our nation,” Ford claimed.
