Joe Biden introduced a new gun control executive order on Tuesday and pledged that he will try to ban all semiautomatic rifles he calls “assault weapons.”
Biden announced his Executive Order in Monterrey, California after a mass shooting in the area during Lunar New Year festivities in January left 11 dead and 20 injured.
The EO claims it will increase the number of background checks to buy guns, promote the expansion of “red flag” gun laws,” and promote better and more secure firearms storage.
Biden on Tuesday also called for the total ban of so-called “assault weapons” and “high-capacity magazines,” meaning magazines that hold 30 rounds or more.
“I’m determined, once again, to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. I led that fight to ban them in 1994. The ten years that law was in place, mass shootings went down,” Biden told the crowd.

“Our Republican friends let it expire ten years later and mass shootings tripled since then, tripled. So let’s finish the job. Ban assault weapons. Ban them again. Do it now. Enough. Do something.”
“Do something big!” he added.
Biden also encouraged Congress to craft gun control measures he can’t implement with EO’s alone.
“Let’s be clear, none of this absolves Congress from the responsibility of acting to pass universal background checks, to eliminate gun manufacturers immunity to liability,” Biden said.
The National Association of Gun Rights responded to Biden’s EO, calling it an “all-out assault on the Second Amendment” that will do nothing to stop crime.
“This is an all-out assault on the Second Amendment, and we’re looking into every legislative and legal option to fight back against the most anti-gun president in U.S. history. What part of ‘shall not be infringed’ does Biden not understand?” said the group’s president Dudley Brown in a statement.
