The communist countries of China and Cuba have reached a secret agreement for China to set up an espionage base on the island nation, according to a bombshell report.
Citing military intelligence officials, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Cuba, located about 100 miles from Florida, will allow Chinese intelligence to easily monitor American ship traffic and collect a wide range of electronic communications throughout the southeastern United States — where many critical military bases are located.
The U.S. Central Command headquarters, which oversees U.S. military activities in the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia, is at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida.
Fort Bragg – now called Fort Liberty – the America’s largest military base, is located in North Carolina.
China will reportedly pay Cuba billions of dollars to construct the base, aimed at scooping up U.S. emails, phone calls, and satellite transmissions.
The officials refused to provide to the WSJ any more details about the proposed spy base, including its location or the stage of construction it was in.
Politico confirmed WSJ’s reporting, but reported that the secret deal has not yet been finalized.
The Biden administration, China, and Cuba have all denied the WSJ’s report.
“We have seen the report. It’s not accurate,” John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, told Reuters without elaborating on his statement.
“We have had real concerns about the China’s relationship with Cuba, and we have been concerned since day one of the Administration about China’s activities in our hemisphere and around the world,” Kirby said. “We are closely monitoring it and taking steps to counter it. We remain confident that we are able to meet all our security commitments at home and in the region.”
A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in Washington said: “We are not aware of the case and as a result we can’t give a comment right now.”
Former President Trump on Saturday reacted to the report, claiming it highlights America’s “decline.”
“Do you believe this? We are a Nation in Decline (to put it mildly!),” he wrote on Truth Social.
Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy noted that Joe Biden has repeatedly downplayed China’s unprecedented spying actions against the U.S. under his watch.
“Biden recently dismissed the Chinese spy balloon incident as a ‘silly balloon’ that got in the way of dialogue with China. Then a silly Chinese warship harassed our U.S. Navy in the Taiwan Strait. Now a silly Chinese spy base just pops up in Cuba with zero response from the U.S. President. the CCP’s investment in Biden Inc. is paying off handsomely. It’ll be interesting to see what the Espionage Act has to say about that,” he tweeted Friday.

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) claimed the report, if true, signals that China is preparing for military conflict with the U.S.
“The most valuable part of a conflict is information. The person that controls the information, the person that intercepts the information. If you can control the information of the conflict, you’re controlling that conflict. China understands that. The United States certainly understands that,” he said Saturday.
The situation bears remarkable similarities to the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when Soviet Russia placed missiles and installed spy bases in Cuba, which was considered to be the closest the two superpowers ever came to nuclear war during the Cold War era.
