An Italian artist has managed to sell one of his works for thousands of dollars – the piece, however, isn’t much to look at. In fact, it’s nothing at all.

The “Io sono (I am)” “sculpture,” created by 67-year-old artist Salvatore Garau, recently sold at auction for roughly $18,000 – despite not physically existing.

The non-existent “sculpture” apparently gets its value from Garau’s description of the empty space, not as “nothing,” but as a “vacuum.”

“The vacuum is nothing more than a space full of energy, and even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that nothing has a weight,” the artist claimed. “Therefore, it has energy that is condensed and transformed into particles, that is, into us.”

Garau also claimed the empty spaces where he designates an “immaterial sculpture” exists are filled with energy.

“When I decide to ‘exhibit’ an immaterial sculpture in a given space, that space will concentrate a certain amount and density of thoughts at a precise point, creating a sculpture that, from my title, will only take the most varied forms. After all, don’t we shape a God we’ve never seen?” he added.

Riiight.

Despite its absence, Garau’s “sculpture” was sold at the Art-Rite auction house in Italy on May 18; the purchaser received a piece of paper.

“As there is no physical representation of the artwork and cannot be reproduced physically or digitally, all the buyer got was a certificate guaranteeing that they indeed bought the invisible art from Garau,” explains Pop Inquirer.

Garau added the purchaser should place the “sculpture” in a private space with dimensions of 150 cm by 150 cm.

This isn’t Garau’s first “immaterial” work.

Last year, he set up an installation at the Piazza de Scalla in Milan, Italy where he claimed a squared-off area contained an invisible sculpture titled, “Buddha in Contemplation.”

Just as with digital art NFTs, the incredible sale of the Warhol-esque art is just another sign we’re living in Clown World.
