The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) apprehended a group of illegal aliens that included Russian nationals and a convicted criminal during a maritime operation in waters near Puerto Rico.
The bust unfolded roughly three nautical miles from the town of Aguadillo on Feb. 28, but information was just released this week.
Puerto Rico police spotted a suspicious 20-foot vessel and alerted USCG Southeast.
USCG Cutter Joseph Tezanos was diverted to the area where the crew encountered the panga-style craft and launched a small boat team to intercept.
Five people were removed from the vessel: a male and female from Russia and three men from the Dominican Republic, one of whom had a prior criminal history in the U.S.
“The crew also transferred the alien facing federal prosecution to U.S. Border Patrol Ramey Sector agents in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, Saturday,” USCG explained in a press release.
“The two Russian aliens were transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations special agents’ custody in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Monday for investigation and removal.”

The Dominicans were turned over to the Dominican Republic Navy for repatriation.
“This interdiction showcases the collaboration and coordination that occurs daily in Puerto Rico between federal, state and local law enforcement authorities to protect the United States’ southernmost maritime border from illegal migration and other security threats,” said USCG Cmdr. Matthew Romano.
“Aliens seeking to make this unlawful journey will be interdicted and repatriated, and repeat offenders are further subject to possible criminal prosecution. Don’t take to the sea.”
