Democrat mayors presiding over sanctuary city jurisdictions will be required to appear before a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform next month to testify on their “obstructionist policies.”

On Monday, House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) announced the mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City are requested to attend a hearing on Feb. 11 to discuss how their policies impede federal immigration authorities efforts to rid communities of illegal aliens.

“Sanctuary jurisdictions and their misguided and obstructionist policies hinder the ability of federal law enforcement officers to effectuate safe arrests and remove dangerous criminals from American communities, making Americans less safe,” Comer said in a statement.

In letters sent to Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, the Committee also requested all documents regarding any state and local communication regarding the sanctuary city programs, inter- and intra-agency communications, and communications with “any non-governmental organization, or representative thereof.”

Chairman Comer added the testimony could be used to craft future legislation.

“In addition to the efforts of the Trump Administration to ensure federal immigration enforcement can proceed unimpeded, Congress must determine whether further legislation is necessary to enhance border security and public safety. It is imperative that federal immigration law is enforced and that criminal aliens are swiftly removed from our communities.”

Responding to the House Committee’s request to testify, Boston Mayor Wu said “the city is still determining how to respond,” according to MassLive.com.

On Inauguration Day, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order instructing the Attorney General to “evaluate and undertake any lawful actions to ensure that so-called ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions, which seek to interfere with the lawful exercise of Federal law enforcement operations.”
